Company

The essence of it is not simple. It is that which is when I’m not distracted. It’s the “why”.

Drugs like the algorithm take my mind away from it, yet it is always there. It calls. Why is it that most cannot go to sleep without a distraction or noise? Why do we avoid the night’s thoughts?

I don’t. Not as long as I behave. It’s the reflection on the reason for that day. The night is the end of your time in the frame to which you woke-up, so you’re saying goodbye when you fall asleep. That’s why kids want to fall asleep in their parents’ bed. It’s why we marry and sleep together, aside from the other reason. It is also why people come together in your last moments. It is in the moments of meaning, of great reflection upon your purpose, that you look for company.

Today, the majority of humans say they find their purpose in their work. In giving their time towards a cause that will be of value either to self or to others. But maybe they find a distraction, and the real moments of meaning come alive at the end.

Maybe there’s something to be said about the company itself.

Could the great endeavours of Elon Musk, Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon Bonaparte, be for them personally, the best possible way to get together with the best people? Could these great adventures - to constitutionalise the best possible moral base or to take humanity to Mars not be a vehicle for their personal satisfaction in life?

What would it look like to go after such great challenges alone? What would I do alone on an island? Truly alone. It would look like death. It would be meaningless. Fighting for hope. The human mind was made for the opposite of that.

The truth is, I haven’t known what it feels like to be alone. Even when I am alone, even if I was stranded on an island, with food, water, and a bed. I am not in a position in which that could kill me because my mind is part of something bigger - progress, a goal. In fact, it is part of the biggest thing, just like Franklin and Musk’s minds were/are, whatever that may be.
